  Thallus ±crustose, squamulose, ±closely attached, orbicular to spreading, usually 1–5 cm wide, bordered by a thin black prothallus. Squamules appressed to substratum, variable, from minute, crenulate stellate structures widely scattered on prothallus, to ±densely clustered, overlapping, with minute, flattened lobules at margins, to ±placodioid, radiating narrow, laciniate lobes with subascending margins. Upper surface smooth, shining, without isidia or soredia, greyish green to dull olive or fawnish; margins slightly white-pubescent. Lower surface pale buff or white-tomentose at margins, dark centrally with copious black, squarrose rhizohyphae. Apothecia frequent, to 1 mm wide, flat to convex; disc smooth, waxy, red-brown; proper exciple visible when apothecium immature, pale, becoming thinner and less distinct. Ascospores 12–25 × 6–9 µm.
     
  A fairly common species in humid habitats in southern W.A., N.S.W., Vic. and Tas., mainly on bark. Typically grows on bark, but also be found on moss and rarely on rock. A widespread primarily Southern Hemisphere taxon.
